What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses ultrasound to obtain a precise image of the organs under investigation. Through the use of a probe that sends ultrasounds resting on the patient’s body or inserted into the vagina or anus, the radiologist / sonographer is able to see the patient’s organs, muscles, cavities and veins. The ultrasounds used for imaging are absolutely harmless to the body. There are no limitations or contraindications to undergoing this type of examination.

Ultrasound is an examination that does not require specific preparation of the patient, however some tricks (as indicated in the following paragraphs) are useful, such as fasting or drinking water before the examination or performing a cleansing enema in the case of transrectal ultrasound.

If the patient is under pharmacological treatment and has to take medications before taking the exam, he can do it: there is no specific contraindication to the ultrasound scan.

Application fields

Ultrasound is a fundamental routine examination in the diagnostic field (internist, surgical, gynecological, endocrinological, urological, obstetric, orthopedic.
Apart from specialties such as cardiology, gynecology and urology – andrology is the sonographer or radiologist to carry out this exam.
The ultrasound has not only diagnostic purpose, it is in fact also used as a guide to assist and make more precise the maneuvers during surgical operations: for example for biopsies, drainage of abscesses or positioning of catheters.
