Periodontitis and overweight. Is there a correlation?

Periodontitis is a widespread disease that creates widespread problems and discomforts for many patients. Sometimes its severity can even lead to surgery and implants to restore smiles and the ability to chew without problems. Remaining on the topic of food, however, another widespread pathology is that of obesity or in any case being overweight. Some studies have shown that there is a correlation between weight and gum disease. What is it about?

Link between periodontitis and overweight

Losing weight can bring benefits to your whole body, but also to your smile. Not everyone is aware of this and think that there is no correlation between periodontitis and weight problems. Nowadays, in fact, research is able to demonstrate how losing weight and being fit can decrease the risk of gum problems. In overweight patients there is a greater production of cytokines which in turn favor inflammatory processes. Those at risk of obesity, therefore, have a greater chance of contracting gum infections.

A study has shown, for example, that in the United States, a country where obesity is widespread, there is a very high percentage of people suffering from gum disease. Here, then, is how and why there is a correlation between periodontitis and overweight even if this is a link that is often ignored and that not everyone is aware of.

To prevent advanced periodontitis or gum problems in general, therefore, you can act first of all on weight, intervening decisively on diet and bad eating habits. A balanced and healthy diet, combined with constant physical activity with the aim of reducing weight and waistline, would bring the blood levels of lipids and sugars back into a physiological range. This would bring obvious benefits, as mentioned, also to our dental health.

The control of pathologies such as overweight and periodontitis would bring clear benefits to the inflammatory state of the body. If at a local level we will achieve a state of oral health and maintain masticatory function, at a systemic level there would be an improvement in blood values and eating habits. This would lead to greater prevention of the risk of incurring serious diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Another correlation between periodontitis and obesity is the sharing of risk factors. These elements are common and can be causes, primary or secondary, of both pathologies:

  • unbalanced diet;
  • tobacco and cigarette smoke;
  • poor oral hygiene;
  • stress.

In conclusion, after having demonstrated the close relationship between periodontitis and overweight, we can state that in order to prevent both pathologies, close collaboration and interdisciplinary checks with a dietician, general practitioner and dental health specialists become essential. This would lead to the maintenance of oral health and that of our entire body. The salient points of the correlation between the two pathologies are:

  • There is an association between overweight-obesity and periodontitis;
  • Obesity and overweight are pathologies on the increase in the population, they represent a health problem and have a negative impact on the quality of life. The same goes for periodontitis;
  • Treating gum problems can help control and balance levels of systemic inflammation.
  • Interaction between periodontists and primary or general health physicians can prevent these two pathologies and the complications associated with them.

To improve the health of every part of the body, therefore, it is necessary to do regular sporting activity, have a healthy and balanced diet and take care of your smile. To achieve this latter objective, it is essential to rely on oral health specialists such as those you find in our Sanident dental center in via Settembrini, 6, in Milan.
